The Two Main Amarnath Yatra Routes
There are two main routes to reach the sacred Amarnath Cave, each offering unique experiences, challenges, and spiritual rewards:

Pahalgam Route Map: Pahalgam – Chandanwadi – Pissu Top – Zoji Bal – Naga Koti – Sheshnag – Warbal – Mahagunas Top – Pabibal – Panchtarni – Sangam – Cave
The Pahalgam route is the traditional route for the Amarnath Yatra, followed by pilgrims over the years. This route is longer but easier to trek compared to the Baltal route. The total distance of this route is 47 km, with 36 km of trekking, and it is completed in 3 to 4 days.
The Amarnath trek journey via the Pahalgam route starts from Chandanwari, with an initial 13 km trek leading to Sheshnag.

Baltal Route Map: Baltal – Domali – Barari – Sangam – Amarnath Cave
The Baltal route is shorter but more challenging compared to the traditional Pahalgam route. The distance of this route is 16 kilometers one way, meaning the round trip can be completed in 1 or 2 days.
This route is not recommended for elderly citizens; however, young and healthy individuals can opt for it during the Amarnath Yatra. But remember, there are limited food stalls available, and there is no option for ponies. Pilgrims can either walk or use “Dandies”(chairs carried by porters) services.
