Recommended 2-Day Srinagar to Leh Itinerary

The 2-day journey is strongly recommended for first-time visitors. It allows for gradual altitude acclimatisation, reduces fatigue and lets you see more attractions along the way.

By splitting the journey, you get the chance to properly explore iconic stops like Sonmarg, Zoji La Pass, Drass and Lamayuru, rather than just passing them by. You arrive in Leh not drained, but acclimatised, aware and actually ready to enjoy Ladakh.

Here’s the complete day-by-day roadmap to help you plan it right.

2-Day Srinagar to Leh Itinerary- Srinagar to Leh taxi booking

Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil (214 km)

Departure: 7:00 AM from Srinagar (TRC / hotel pickup)

  • Ganderbal → Kangan → Sonmarg (87 km): The drive passes through the Sindh Valley. Reach Sonmarg, the “Meadow of Gold,” for breakfast. Optional pony ride or walk to Thajiwas Glacier.
  • Sonmarg → Zero Point / Zojila Pass (107 km): This is the gateway into Ladakh. Zoji La sits at 3,528 m and is one of the most technically demanding passes on the route. Snow is visible even in June. Take a short halt at Zero Point.
  • Zojila → Drass (140 km): After crossing Zoji La you officially enter the Ladakh Union Territory. Drass is the second coldest inhabited place on Earth (temperatures reach -45°C in winter). Visit the Kargil War Memorial, which commemorates the 1999 Kargil War.
  • Drass → Kargil (204 km): Arrive Kargil by early evening. Overnight stay in Kargil (hotels available in all budgets). Explore the local market along the Suru River.

Day 2: Kargil to Leh (204 km)

  • Mulbek (30 km from Kargil): See the ancient Chamba statue carved into a rock face — one of the earliest Buddhist monuments in Ladakh.
  • Namika La & Fotu La Passes: Two high passes offering panoramic Himalayan views. Fotu La (4,108 m) is the highest point on the Srinagar–Leh highway.
  • Lamayuru Monastery (160 km from Kargil): One of the oldest and most dramatic monasteries in Ladakh, perched above a moonscape valley. Allow 30–45 minutes here.
  • Moonland: The barren, eroded landscape near Lamayuru resembles a lunar surface. A popular photo stop.
  • Sangam (Indus–Zanskar Confluence): Where the blue waters of the Zanskar River meet the brown Indus. Visible from the roadside.
  • Gurudwara Pathar Sahib: A revered Sikh shrine on the Leh highway. Short stop for blessings.

  • Hall of Fame Museum: Tribute to the Indian Army’s role in Ladakh. Arrive Leh city by 4:00–5:00 PM.

What’s Included and Excluded

Understanding exactly what your fare covers helps you budget accurately for the trip.

Included:

  • Driver’s charges for the entire one-way journey
  • Fuel costs
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Road tolls

Not included (charged separately):

  • Driver’s accommodation if you halt in Kargil overnight (₹2,000 extra)
  • Entry fees to monasteries, memorials, or attractions
  • Your own food and accommodation in Kargil

There are no hidden charges. The fare quoted at booking is what you pay on completion of the trip.

AC Usage on Mountain Roads (Important)

All cabs are fully air-conditioned. However, during steep climbs on high altitude passes like Zoji La and Fotu La, the driver may temporarily turn off the AC to prevent engine overheating and ensure safe driving. This is standard practice on mountain roads. The AC is turned back on once the road levels out.

Book Your Srinagar to Leh Taxi

Call or WhatsApp us at +91-9796466052 to book your Srinagar to Leh taxi and get the latest fare details, vehicle availability, and route information. Our team can confirm bookings, answer questions about road conditions and help you choose the right vehicle for your group size available 24 hours a day during peak season (May–October).

What Your Srinagar to Leh Taxi Can and Cannot Do in Leh

This is one of the most important things to understand before booking and many travellers are caught off-guard.

Srinagar-registered taxis (yellow plates) are authorised for one purpose only: dropping you at your hotel in Leh city. They are strictly prohibited by the Ladakh Taxi Union from conducting any local sightseeing in Ladakh this includes Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri, Khardung La and all other tourist destinations in Ladakh.

Once you arrive in Leh, you must hire a Leh-registered taxi from the local Ladakh Taxi Union for all onward travel within Ladakh.

For self-drive travellers: rental cars with black number plates (Zoomcar etc.) are frequently stopped at Leh checkposts. Only white-plate privately owned vehicles are exempt.

Plan accordingly: Book your Leh local taxi in advance during peak season (June–September), as vehicles are limited and rates are union-fixed. Visit our Leh Ladakh local taxi service page for local Ladakh cab bookings.

Altitude Safety — What Every Traveller Must Know

Leh sits at 3,500 metres (11,480 ft) above sea level. Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) is a genuine risk for travellers arriving from sea level, especially those who fly directly to Leh.

Why the road journey is safer than flying: The 2-day Srinagar–Leh taxi route provides gradual altitude gain from Srinagar (1,585 m) to Kargil (2,676 m) on Day 1 and then to Leh (3,500 m) on Day 2. This stepwise ascent significantly reduces the risk of AMS compared to a 1-hour flight where you go from near sea level to 3,500 m in one go.

Symptoms of AMS to watch for: Headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If symptoms are severe, descend immediately and seek medical help.

Travel My Kashmir’s mountain safety measures:

  • All our drivers on the Srinagar–Leh route have 10+ years of experience on high-altitude mountain roads including Zoji La, Namika La, and Fotu La.
  • Drivers are familiar with medical facilities and oxygen availability at key points along the route.
  • We advise a rest day in Leh on arrival — do not trek or exert yourself on the first day.
  • Stay well hydrated throughout the journey. Avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours in Leh.

Srinagar to Leh Road Conditions and Best Time to Travel

Road open season: Mid-May to mid-November (subject to BRO announcement each year)

Peak tourist season: June to September — best weather, all passes fully open.

Zoji La Pass: This is the critical bottleneck. It is the first major pass after Srinagar and typically opens in late April or early May. It closes with heavy snowfall, sometimes as early as October. The pass can also close temporarily due to landslides or snowfall even during the summer season.

Road condition tip: Always check the current Zoji La road status before departure, especially in May, September and October. The BRO (Border Roads Organisation) updates road status regularly. Our team at Travel My Kashmir monitors conditions daily during peak season and will inform you of any disruptions.

Avoid: Travelling this route during December–April when Zoji La is closed. Even with alternative routes, winter travel requires extreme caution.

Shared Taxi from Srinagar to Leh

For budget travellers, shared taxis offer a significantly cheaper way to make the journey.

  • Shared SUV (Innova / Scorpio) :  ₹5,000 per person
  • Shared Tavera :  ₹5,000 per person
  • Bus (JKSRTC): ₹1,500–₹2,000 per person

How shared taxis work: Shared cabs seat 4–6 passengers and depart from the taxi stand near TRC (Tourist Reception Centre) in Srinagar, typically early morning (6:00–7:00 AM). Departure is when the vehicle is full, so there may be a wait. Shared cabs usually complete the journey in one long day with minimal stops.

Shared taxi vs private taxi: Shared taxis are cheaper but offer less flexibility with no stops of your choice, no itinerary customisation and no guarantee of a specific departure time. For families or groups of 3+, a private cab often works out at a similar or lower per-head cost with significantly more comfort.

A standard SUV like the Innova or Scorpio costs ₹24,500 for a full private cab. Shared SUV seats are available at ₹5,000 per person. All fares are one-way and exclude tolls and the driver’s overnight stay in Kargil.

What does the Srinagar to Leh taxi fare include?
The fare covers the driver’s charges, fuel, vehicle maintenance and road tolls for the entire one way journey. It does not include the driver’s accommodation for an overnight halt in Kargil (₹2,000 extra), entry fees to monasteries or memorials or your own food and stay in Kargil.

What is the distance from Srinagar to Leh?
The road distance from Srinagar to Leh is approximately 418 km via NH1, passing through Sonmarg, Zoji La Pass, Drass, Kargil and Lamayuru. The straight-line distance by air is around 256 km.

How long does the Srinagar to Leh journey take by taxi?
A non-stop drive takes approximately 10–11 hours. The recommended 2-day journey (with an overnight stay in Kargil) splits into roughly 7 hours on Day 1 (Srinagar to Kargil) and 5 hours on Day 2 (Kargil to Leh).

Can we go from Srinagar to Leh in one day?
Yes, a single day drive is possible but not recommended for tourists. The route crosses passes above 4,000 m and arriving in Leh without gradual acclimatisation significantly increases the risk of altitude sickness (AMS). A 2-day journey via Kargil is safer and far more enjoyable.

Can I stop at Sonmarg, Kargil or Lamayuru along the way?
Yes, the 2-day route is designed around these stops. You can pause at Sonmarg for breakfast and a glimpse of Thajiwas Glacier, visit the Kargil War Memorial in Drass and stop at Lamayuru Monastery, Magnetic Hill and the Sangam confluence on Day 2. Let us know your preferred stops when booking so the driver can plan timing accordingly.

What is the shared taxi fare from Srinagar to Leh?
Shared taxi fares are ₹5,000 per person in a shared Innova, Scorpio or Tavera. Shared cabs depart from the taxi stand near TRC in Srinagar, typically between 6:00–7:00 AM and leave once full.

The route is maintained by the BRO, though occasional closures due to landslides or snowfall can occur at Zoji La Pass in shoulder months (May, October). We monitor road conditions daily during peak season.

When is the best time to travel from Srinagar to Leh?
June through September, when the highway is fully open and weather is most stable. May and October are possible but Zoji La conditions should be checked beforehand. The route is closed roughly November to mid-May due to snow.

Should I take the Srinagar–Leh route or the Manali–Leh route?
Srinagar–Leh is generally considered the more scenic and gentler route in terms of altitude gain, with the highest pass (Fotu La, 4,108 m) lower than Manali–Leh’s Tanglang La (5,328 m) making it a better choice for first-time high altitude travellers. Manali–Leh has more camping-style stops but a rougher road surface. Many travellers combine both as a loop, entering via one and exiting via the other.

Do I need a permit to travel from Srinagar to Leh?
No permit is needed for the highway or Leh city just keep valid photo ID. An Inner Line Permit is required only for onward travel to Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri and similar restricted areas. See our full permit breakdown.

Yes, white-plate privately owned vehicles can travel the highway without restriction, though commercial/rental plates face checkpost restrictions in Leh. Full details here.
