About Amarnath Yatra

 

The Amarnath Yatra, an annual Hidu pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave located at lidder valley in district Anantnag at an altitude of 3,888 meters, 45 km from Pahalgam and from Srinagar it is  around 141 km. The cave is surrounded by glaciers and snowy mountains and remains covered by snow throughout the year. Amarnath Yatra is one of the most toughest and challenging journey  for the devotees. This pilgrimage  is believed to be abode of Lord Shiva. Every Year Thousands of devotees visits the Amarnath cave to seek blessings from the divine. In year 2000 shri Amarnath-ji shrine board (SASB) Amarnath was setup by the Government of jammu and Kashmir for the overall management  of the pilgrimage , including medical facilities, infrastructure, security and other logistical arrangements.

The annual pilgrimage to Shri Amarnath temple takes place in the month of Shravan and starts from Pahalgam and Baltal on specific dates . The Shri Amarnath-ji Yatra of 2024 will start on its scheduled date, and the Amarnath yatra 2024 registration date will also be announced accordingly. Amarnath Yatra routes

 

There are two route map for the Amarnath yatra | Pahalgam-Amarnath and Baltal-Amarnath

Pahalgam to Amarnath route

 Amarnath Yatra 2024 starts from Pahalgam base camp to Chandanwari, the distance between them is 16kms ,the road connectivity is upto to Chandanwari only. From chandanwari you have to trek to reach the Amarnath Cave and the first top you reach is Pissu top. After a trek of 14 km you will reach sheshnag and then a trek of around 4km you will reach Panchtarni. The Amarnath cave is only 2 kms from Panchtarni. Pahalgam to Amarnath Cave distance is completed in around three to five days (one way). Pahalgam route is considered easier then baltal route. So this is a better option for senior citizens or for those having some health issues. So, if you’re or you have a senior devotee with you , this is the better option. From Pahalgam route Amarnath yatra distance is approximately 36 to 48 km.

By Road there are many ways to come.  The cheapest way is to come to Katra by Train then get on a bus or taxi and arrive till Banihal Railway Station, Further from Banihal Station get dropped off at Awantipora , From there hire a taxi till Pahlagam and then from there its a trekk which has to be done on your own. The total journey will cost you around 2000-3000 on individual basis and sharing basis.

Baltal to Amarnath route

Amarnath-Baltal starts from Baltal to Domali. From Domali there is a trek of 6km to Barari  which is 4km away from sangam. Once you reach sangam , you will be only 2 km away from the destination , the Amarnath Cave.This is shorter route but is also difficult as compared to Pahalgam route . Baltal to Amarnath cave distance is 14 km and can be completed in 1 or 2 days. On this route there are no ponies available, handicapped and old aged pilgrims can opt for dandies. Do’s and don’ts for Amarnath yatris

Do’s

  • It is recommended that you walk a minimum of 4-5 kilometers daily for at least one month before yatra to increase the oxygen efficiency in your body.
  • It is recommended that you bring along warm clothing, an umbrella, gloves, a flashlight, waterproof shoes, a jacket, woolen socks, and a walking stick for the journey, as it will involve trekking across high mountains.
  • It is suggested that women wear pant-shirt, Salwar Kameez, or a track suit instead of a saree.
  • It is advisable to bring along a water bottle, dried fruits, toffees, and chocolates.
  • To protect yourself from sun burns you can carry cold cream or Vaseline.
  • Avoid trek alone always trek in a group.
