Kashmir is home to numerous lakes, including the famous Dal Lake, known for its scenic beauty and houseboats and Wular Lake, one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes. Other prominent lakes include Nigeen Lake, a quieter extension of Dal and several high altitude glacial lakes like Gadsar, Gangabal and Vishansar, often explored on treks.
Apart from these Lakes, there are many rivers in Kashmir including the Chenab river, Kishanganga river, Lidder river, Sindh river and the famous one Jhelum river. The river Jhelum is the main source of water for irrigation in Kashmir and its main source is in Verinag (A famous Mughal garden, located in district Anantnag).
Prominent Lakes in Kashmir
Dal Lake: The most famous lake in Srinagar, known for its stunning views, floating gardens and traditional houseboats. Shikara rides on Dal Lake are a must for every visitor.
Wular Lake: One of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, located in north Kashmir. It plays an important ecological role and offers breathtaking views of surrounding mountains.
Nigeen Lake: A quieter extension of Dal Lake, ideal for a peaceful stay in houseboats and shikara rides away from the crowds.
High-Altitude and Glacial Lakes
Gadsar Lake: A high-altitude glacial lake surrounded by alpine meadows and snow-clad peaks, often visited on the Great Lakes Trek.
Gangabal Lake: Situated at the base of Mount Harmukh, this sacred lake is popular among trekkers and pilgrims.
Vishansar Lake: Another gem of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, known for its crystal-clear waters and lush green surroundings in summer.
Tulian Lake: A stunning high altitude lake that attracts trekkers and adventure enthusiasts.
Kausar Nag Lake: A hidden high altitude lake nestled in the Pir Panjal range.
Satsar Lake: A group of seven small glacial lakes, a key highlight of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.
