Kokernag is home to the Government Trout Fish Farming Project an important centre for breeding Rainbow and Brown Trout. The Fisheries Department describes it as a mother unit producing quality trout seed that is distributed to rearing units and used for stocking water bodies across J&K.

The Bringi and Kokernag streams are among Kashmir’s designated trout waters. Angling requires a Fisheries Department licence or permit and is generally open from April to September, although the season can be changed depending on conditions. The department currently lists an angling fee of ₹1,500 per day for local anglers and ₹3,500 for foreign anglers. Permits can be booked online through the Fisheries Department.

How to Reach Verinag & Explore the Anantnag Springs Circuit
Kokernag is about 76 km from Srinagar via Anantnag and around 10 km from Anantnag town. For a south Kashmir day trip, it fits naturally into the Achabal → Kokernag → Verinag route, making it easy to combine three of the area’s famous spring and garden destinations in one outing.
