The Naranag Gangabal Trek is a breathtaking trek based in the Kashmir Valley. It begins in Naranag village, located in the Ganderbal district, and reaches an altitude of 3800 meters at Kolesar Lake, before concluding at Chatturgul village. This makes it the only trek in the region with a different return route. The trek passes through lush pine forests, serene meadows, and panoramic mountain views and finally takes you to the twin alpine lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol, located at the foothills of Mount Harmukh(5300 m).

The return route of the Naranag Gangabal Trek is via Kolesar Lake, which is the highest point of the journey at 3800 meters. The trek begins with a steep climb through the pine forests of Butsheri and followed by a gentle walk across serene meadows.

The Naranag Gangabal lake Trek is a six days trek and is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. While the trail does not involve any technical climbing, trekkers should be prepared for steep ascents, descents, rocky terrain, and stream crossings.

Day 1:  Arrive in Srinagar and shift to Hotel or Houseboat.
Begin your journey by arriving in Srinagar. Spend the night in a cozy Houseboat or at a comfortable hotel.

Day 2: Srinagar – Naranag – Trunkhol
After breakfast, we will drive directly from Srinagar to Naranag, which takes approximately 3 hours. From there, we will begin the trek to the Trunkhol camping site.

Day 3: Trunkhol – Gangabal Lake
From Trunkhol, we will resume our trek early in the morning, walking through meadows, and then set up camp at Gangbal Lake for an overnight stay.

Day 4: Gangabal Lake – Kolesar – Mahlish
From Gangabal, we will start trekking towards Kolesar Lake, passing through meadows that are lush and green in summer and blanketed in snow during winter, until we reach Mahlish Meadow, where we will stay overnight.

Day 5: Mahlish – Chaturgul – Srinagar
On the fifth day of our trek, we will descend to Chaturgul village, leaving Mahlish behind. The descent, which takes approximately four hours, passes through a scenic pine forest. At Chaturgul village, the Naranag Mahlish Trek comes to an end, followed by a direct drive to Srinagar.

Day 1

Day 2 : Drive to Naranag then trek to Trunkhol

    • A 50km Drive from Srinagar to Naranag.

Day 3 : Trunkhol – Gangabal Lake

  • Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: Trunkhol (2,650 m) to Gangabal Lake (3,570 m)

    • We will leave Trunkhol and move towards Gangabal Lake.
    • Arriva at Gangabal Lake, and enjoy its scenery.
    • We will overnight stay at Gangabal.

Day 4 : Gangabal – Kolesar – Mahlish

  • Trek Distance: 8 km
  • Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: Gangabal Lake (3,570 m) to Mahlish Meadow (3,800 m)
  • Activities:
    • After having breakfast, we will begin the our trek towards Kolesar Lake, passing through scenic ridges and vast meadows.
    • From here you can enjoy the beautiful views of Gangabal & Nundkol.
    • Finally we will arrive at Mahlish campsite, perfect for an overnight stay.

Day 5 : Mahlish – Chaturgul – Srinagar

  • Trek Distance: 10 km
  • Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: Mahlish Meadow (3,800 m) to Chaturgul (2,200 m)
  • Activities:
  • This is the last day our trek.
  • Once we reach the chaturgul village, we will board in our cars and drive to Srinagar.
  • Drop-off at your hotel or houseboat, marking the end of the trek.

Day 6 : Leisure Day/ Rest Day

This day serves as a buffer or a reserved rest period for those who wish to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of Nundkol and Gangabal Lakes. Accommodation will be provided with two persons per tent, and dinner will be served.

Please note that this buffer day is scheduled to take place on the fourth day of the trek.

  2. From Srinagar, you need to travel to Naranag village Ganderbal, which is usually the starting point for the trek. This is about 48 km from Srinagar and takes around 2-3 hours by road. We provide the transportation service from Srinagar to the base camp.
  3. It is always best to keep a buffer day. If your trek is completed on time, you can utilize this buffer day for local sightseeing in Srinagar and can enjoy activities like Shikara ride in Dal lake.
