History of Nishat garden in Srinagar

Nishat garden in Srinagar was built  and designed in 1633 by Asif Khan (the elder brother of Nur Jahan) the wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This garden was a popular place for the Mughal emperors and their families to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Kashmir. The garden was also used as a venue for royal gatherings and celebrations.

After Nishat Garden was built in 1633, Emperor Shah Jahan liked it so much that that he expressed his appreciation to Asif Khan three times. Shah Jahan almost shut down the garden for some time, stopped the water supply, leaving the garden empty for a while. Due to this Asif Khan was heartbroken. But one of his servant restored water supply to the garden and when Shah Jahan heard about this incident surprisingly he was not disturbed by the disobedience of his orders . Surprisingly, Shah Jahan appreciated the loyalty of the servant to his master and also restored the full water supply to the garden. Today, Nishat Bagh in Srinagar is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kashmir.

Nishat Bagh is a best example of Mughal garden architecture. The garden is divided into twelve terraces, which are arranged in a cascade. Each terrace of this garden has a central water channel and is lined with chinar trees and other flowers. The garden also has a number of fountains and pavilions. Nishat garden Kashmir has two sections, the public garden and the private garden for the Zanana (harem), while Shalimar Bagh has four sections. The Zanana garden is located at the top of the garden while the lower terraces is connected to the Dal Lake Srinagar. Both Shalimar Garden and Nishat Garden share the same water supply.
