When it comes to traveling in Leh Ladakh, tourists need to be aware of the rules set by the Ladakh Taxi Union. These guidelines are in place to safeguard the livelihood of local taxi operators and ensure that tourism benefits the local community directly.
All sightseeing tours and trips within Ladakh must be done using Ladakh registered taxis for local travel. Whether you want to explore Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, or Tso Moriri, only union approved cabs are permitted.
One of the most important rules is that taxis from other states are not allowed in Leh Ladakh for sightseeing. Vehicles rented from Srinagar, Manali, or Delhi (even with yellow number plates) can only drop passengers at Leh city. They cannot be used for local travel or excursions.
Private cars with white plates are allowed only if they are registered in your name or an immediate family member’s name. If you are driving someone else’s vehicle, you may be asked for documents to prove your relation. Without this the car may not be permitted beyond Leh.
If you are planning to visit Zanskar Valley, you cannot use a Leh taxi. Instead, only Kargil registered taxis are permitted for Zanskar sightseeing. This ensures fair opportunities for drivers from that region as well.
