Latest Update (June 2026):

I recently visited Doodhpathri on 19th June 2026. Here’s what’s currently there:

The first and most important thing to know is that the Shaliganga River viewpoint is currently closed and visitors are not being allowed access. There is also a time restriction as tourists are permitted only between 9:30 AM to 4:00–5:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly.

Regarding parking, there are two options. The first parking area is located just to the right of the main entry gate. The second is located near the second meadow of Doodhpathri. Entry to the second parking point is not allowed after 11:00 AM, so try to reach before 10:00–10:30 AM if you want to park there. If you reached late you will need to walk, hire a pony, or take an ATV to reach the second meadow.

Tip: Avoid visiting on Sundays, as there’s heavy local rush and traffic jams.

Why is it called the “Valley of Milk”?

The name “Doodhpathri” comes from the local legend that the famous Kashmiri saint Sheikh ul Aalam Sheikh Noor din Noorani once prayed here. Searching for water, he is said to have struck the ground with his stick and milk gushed out. However, when he declared that the milk could only be used for drinking, the stream immediately turned into water. The name also reflects the fact that the river’s water appears white as it hits the rocks, resembling milk from a distance.

He said the milk could not be used for ablution and was only for drinking after that, the milk turned into water and the meadow came to be called Doodhpathri “doodh” means milk and “pathri” means meadow.

Doodhpathri Waterfall Point, also known as the Doodhpathri River View Point is the main attraction near Doodhpathri though it’s important to note it isn’t actually a waterfall.
