About Dachigam National Park

Dachigam is a national park located in the zabarwan ranges, just 22 km from Srinagar “the summer capital of Kashmir” and is situated at an altitude ranging from 5500 ft to 14000 ft above sea level. It has all types of terrains from gently sloping grasslands to sharp rocky outcrops and cliffs. Spreads over an area of 141 km. The dachigam National park is home to several endangered species and Dachigam national park is famous for the Kashmir stag “Hangul”. It is also home to a variety of other animals, such as the Himalayan black bear, musk deer, Himalayan brown bear, leopard, Hill fox, and various species of birds including Black Bulbul, Red-billed blue magpie, Babbler, Wallcreeper, Wagtail, Otter Birds, Cinnamon sparrow, etc.

Initially, the park was inhabited by 10 villages in the same vicinity. However, to protect the wildlife and prevent human-animal conflict, the 10 villages were relocated, and the entire area was designated as a protected wildlife sanctuary. It was a protected area since 1910 and was established for providing a clean drinking water facility to Srinagar city. In 1981 it was upgraded and declared as National park.
