What is the climate of Jammu and Kashmir

The  climate of Jammu and Kashmir UT has two distinct climatic zones : the subtropical Jammu region and the temperate Kashmir valley zones .The climatic conditions of Jammu and Kashmir is quite diverse, varying greatly depending on the region and altitude. In the Jammu region, the climate is generally subtropical, with hot summers and relatively milder winters, while as Kashmir Valley has a more temperate climate, characterized by cold winters with heavy snowfall and cool summers.

Climate of Jammu division

Jammu, the winter capital of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, experiences a subtropical climate with variations in temperature throughout the year. The climate in Jammu is different from the climate of Kashmir. The Pir Panjal Range has a great impact on the climate of Jammu division. The southern region experiences a subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters, similar to that of Punjab, while the northern mountainous parts have a climate similar to Kashmir. Out of the two divisions, Jammu has the hottest climate. From July to September, Jammu receives monsoon showers, providing relief from the scorching heat. The southern parts of Jammu are very hot, and the maximum temperature ranges above 45 degrees Celsius in summer, while the winters are pleasant and the temperatures can dip below 4°C in January. Most people from Kashmir prefer to stay in Jammu during the winter season.

The Jammu division has been categorized into three seasons, determined by the distribution of temperature and annual rainfall.

Summer 
The summer season in Jammu division is hot and humid, with temperatures soaring up to 46°C.
Monsoon or Rainy Season
Jammu receives monsoon showers during these months, bringing relief from the intense summer heat. 
Winter
Winter in Jammu is relatively cold but pleasant. Temperatures can dip, especially in January, and snowfall may occur in the higher reaches of the region. The winter season in Jammu is the best time to visit, as the weather is pleasant.

Climate of Kashmir division

The climate of Kashmir is cold because Kashmir Valley is surrounded by the Pir Panjal range, and the great Himalayan ranges play a significant role in regulating its climate. Winter in Kashmir starts from the month of November to February. The coldest months are December and January, with temperatures dropping down to -5 degrees Celsius in Srinagar. Meanwhile, in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, the temperature drops down to -13 degrees Celsius.

The hottest month in Kashmir is July, with the maximum temperature reaching up to 34 degrees Celsius in Srinagar. The higher reaches, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and Gurez Valley, remain relatively cooler compared to the plains of Kashmir.

What are 4 Seasons in Kashmir

Spring(March to May): In the spring season, the weather is pleasant, with temperatures gradually rising. Flowers start blooming, and the famous Badaam Wari in Srinagar becomes the main attraction for tourists in the spring season. During spring, Kashmir receives a lot of rainfall. Locally, the spring season in Kashmir is also known as Chhatar, Besakih, and Jaith.

Summer (June to August): The summer season in Kashmir is the hottest and is considered the peak tourist season. During this time, the days are long, and the nights are short, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C. The lush green meadows of Kashmir are at their peak. ‘Har’ and ‘Sawan’ are some other names for the summer season in Kashmir. The summer season is the best time to visit Kashmir as all the offbeat places are open during this season.

Autumn (September to November): From the autumn season, the weather starts to cool down, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, and the leaves of chinar trees begin changing their color from green to golden. The harvesting of apples also takes place during the autumn season in Kashmir. In the Kashmiri language, autumn is known as ‘Harud.’ Other names for the autumn season in Kashmir are Asuj, Katak, and Magar.

Winter (December to February): The winter season is considered the coldest season of Kashmir. . The harsh winter period, known as ‘Chilai Kalan,’ starts from December 21 to January 31. Lakes and streams start freezing during this winter spell. Gulmarg becomes the main attraction for skiing and other winter sports activities. Locals wear a traditional dress known as ‘pheran’ and use a portable fire pot called ‘kangri’ to keep them warm during winter.

Locals divide the winter season in Kashmir into three parts.

  • The 40 days of Chilai Kalan, from December 21 to January 31.
  • The 20 days of chilai khurd from February 1 to February 20.
  • Chilla Bache for last days of February.
