Mountaineering in Kashmir

The Zanskar, Pir Panjal and Karakoram are mountaineering delight, and the green pine forest, animal life, and rich plant life add charm to these mountains and peaks. The mountains in Sonamarg provide a favorable environment for rapid climbing and descent, as compared to the lower peaks of Kishtwar which are more challenging due to their rough and uneven terrain. Due to the different mountain ranges in Jammu and Kashmir , it is heaven for mountaineering and trekking enthusiast.

Ladakh is heaven for mountaineers as Ladakh has so many peaks and mountains to climb. The terrains in Ladakh are not suited for beginners as one should have expert skills and must be physically fit to climb these peaks. The climbing season in Ladakh starts from May to September but the best time to go for climbing is from June to September as there are less chances of rainfall during this period. Some of the most challenging and difficult valleys in Ladakh are Suru and Zanskar valleys.

Mountaineering in Kashmir

Some popular peaks in Suru and  Zanskar valleys are Stok-khangri Massif (6153 m), Nun Kun Massif (7,077m), Pinnacle (6,930m), White Needle (6,500m), Z1( 6,400m) and D41 (5,600m). Nun Kun Massif is the highest peak in Ladakh. The Nun Kun Massif is the most frequent climbing area and sometimes is booked for months by climbing expeditions. Kun was first conquered in 1913 while Nun was first conquered in 1953. 

The base camp for  Stok-khangri Massif is located in the village of Stok and takes nearly two days to trek to reach there. During the trek to Stok Khangrine has to cross several passes including Kongmaru La to reach stok khangri. The region is also home to several other peaks, such as Gulap Kangri and Matho West, as well as a number of unnamed peaks in the altitude range of 5500m and 6400m.

Harmukh: It is a part of the Himalayas, located in the Ganderbal district at an elevation of 5142m. It is mostly climbed from Arin Bandipora. The best season for the Harmukh expedition is the Summer season.

Tattakuti: It is one of the highest peak in the Pir Panjal range of the Kashmir region at an elevation of 4760m. At the top of Tattakuti peak, you will get a beautiful view of the surrounding peaks such as Nanga Parbat Nun Kun, Harmukh , Kolahoi, Sirbal, etc.

Kolahoi: Also known as the Matterhorn of Kashmir is the highest mountain peak in Kashmir at an altitude of 5425m. Kolahoi Peak expedition is one of the toughest and least summited peak in Kashmir. The trek to Kolahoi peak starts from Aru Valley.

Sunset Peak: Located in the Pir Panjal range of Kashmir standing at an altitude of 4745m. This is the highest peak in the Pir Panjal range. Sunset peak expedition commences from Yusmarg. In winter the trail is covered under a blanket of thick snow so the best time for Sunset peak expedition is during summer season.

Guidelines for Mountaineering in Kashmir

  • Hire a local guide who is familiar with the terrain.
  • Acclimatize yourself to the altitude before attempting a climb.
  • Carry enough food and water with you.
  • Stay warm and dry.
  • Follow the rules and regulations of the local authorities.
  • The age should be between 18 to 48 years.
  • Not recommended for those who are suffering from high/low blood pressure, asthma.
